Don't Quit Poem
by Anonymous

When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,       dont quit2 300x199 Dont Quit Poem
When the road you're trudging seems all up hill,
When the funds are low and the debts are high,
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit,
Rest! if you must; but don't you quit.

Life is queer with its twists and turns,
As everyone of us sometimes learns,
And many a failure turns about
When he might have won had he stuck it out;
Don't give up, though the pace seems slow;
You might succeed with another blow.

Often the goal is nearer than
It seems to a faint and faltering man,
Often the struggler has given up
When he might have captured the victor's cup.
And he learned too late, when the night slipped down,
How close he was to the golden crown.

Success is failure turned inside out;
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt;
And you never can tell how close you are,
It may be near when it seems afar;
So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit;
It's when things seem worst that you mustn't quit.

  1. Thanks for the poem! I needed that ;o)

  2. Hi Mona,
    Glad you enjoyed ‘The Don’t Quit’ Poem. There are times when we all need a boost of encouragement. And remember…. “When one door closes… another door opens!” and often from where and when we least expect it.

  3. Hi, did you know there is a guy claiming to have written ‘Don’t Quit’? Seems like he is really the guy. I believe him.

  4. Here is his website, I forgot to put it in my last post. Sorry.

  6. This poem really is a must reference article to read over and over again for it can recharge one’s loosing energy on their way up. I love reading it and has actual bookmark this particular post for a quick link to it anytime I need refreshment about its topics covered. Thank you for sharing it with us, Gaida.

  7. Two weeks ago, I was going through papers found in my Grandmother’s attic, and there is the poem “Don’t Quit”. The paper is signed by my uncle and it is dated 1943. Does anyone know for sure when this poem was written or could this be the original? Would love to know. My uncle was killed in 1944 during World War II in a plane crash. I will check out the web site of the guy claiming to have written it.

  8. The verse “Don’t Quit” was published as early as 1901, though it was very popular in the 1920s among America’s unions. I have copies of several union newsletter journals from the early 1920s with the poem in it, all attributed anonymously.
    It was also given to Lou Gehrig on a large parchment on his retirement at Yankee Stadium on July 4, 1939.
    I’m afraid modern claims of authorship are false.

  9. Thank you so much for the information. I did not believe that the guy who claims to have written it, actually wrote it. I love the poem and have it taped on my desk. Again, thank you.

  10. I’ve read around about this guy, Gerard Haughey, who claims he wrote ‘Don’t Quit’, there are few comments he makes with regard to a group of people who no matter where his name comes up post up messages that they ‘found a copy of Don’t Quit in their attic’ or their grandmother had the poem, or that when they were 5 years old they used to recite the poem.. So as it goes the people who are basically just trying to refute this man, who claims the poem is his, always use references like the year they recall it from, or that their ‘grandmother’ used to have it.. In other words the message is that the poem is so old that this guy couldn’t have possibly ever written the poem. Yet, if you read his story at http://dontquit.vpweb.com you can’t see any hint of a lie or deceit. I couldn’t. Also, all these people who say they recall the poem from years past never have any proof? It’s a mystery.

  11. I just read the entire story at http://dontquit.vpweb.com including what appears to be a new page on the site tabbed “Who Wrote DQ”, interesting bit of Gerard’s input there. You may want to check it out. Just look for the tab on the website and click on it.

    I feel that I need to say that no one really knows who wrote this poem. It is a ‘he said’ ’she said’ until this is proven which is highly unlikely. So, when someone says something like “Thank you so much for the information. I did not believe that the guy who claims to have written it” it makes it sound as though someone is speaking in the form of ‘definite knowledge’ which doesn’t exist yet for this poem. Just keep an open mind that’s all I can say because you just never know who is really being ‘honest’ and who is really being ‘a big mouth know-nothing’. In any event, Gerard Haughey, is the only guy with an actual story that makes honest sense about this poem. why haven’t all these other people now claiming they wrote this poem put up their own website? Gerard is the first person to do that, doesn’t that say something? I mean it takes money to put up a website, maybe that’s why no one else put one up because no one would spend money on a thing they weren’t absolutely sure of. just my thoughts.

    Thanks,
    Jeff

    Sorry I saw this movie too and in the scene where the poem is presented the title ‘Don’t Quit’ is the only thing visible.. Isn’t that interesting. The other, even more interesting thing, about this movie’s ‘Don’t Quit’ poem is that if you go to google and type in things like “poem Lou Gegrig was handed in the movie “pride of the yankees’ there are 0 ZERO results on such a poem? Google has other results for a poem for Lou Gehrig but it’s never ‘Don’t Quit’?? Why is that?
